Applying for Study Rights

To study in Australia, you generally need to apply for a Student visa (subclass 500), which requires acceptance into a CRICOS-registered course, obtaining a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), and meeting financial and English language requirements. Applications are submitted online via ImmiAccount. For those on other visas, study rights depend on specific visa conditions.

Applying for study rights as a new student

  • Get a Letter of Offer: Apply to a CRICOS-registered educational institution and receive a Letter of Offer for your chosen course.
  • Obtain a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE): After accepting the offer and meeting any conditions, the institution issues a CoE, which is essential for your visa application.
  • Prepare your visa application: Gather required documents including proof of English proficiency, evidence of financial capacity to support your stay, and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).
  • Create an ImmiAccount: Set up an account on the Department of Home Affairs website to submit and manage your visa application.
  • Submit your Student visa (subclass 500) application: Lodge the application online through your ImmiAccount.
  • Monitor your application: Regularly check your ImmiAccount for updates or requests for additional information.

For students holding other visas

  • Bridging Visa E holders: Check your visa conditions carefully, as this visa may restrict your ability to study. You often need permission from the Department of Home Affairs before enrolling in courses.
  • Other visa holders: Study rights vary depending on your visa type. Always review your visa conditions and seek advice from the Department or a migration lawyer if unsure about your eligibility to study.

Important considerations

  • Ensure your course is CRICOS-registered to be eligible for a Student visa.
  • Maintain compliance with visa conditions to avoid cancellation or refusal.
  • Seek professional advice if you have complex visa circumstances or need to extend study rights.
