eVisitor (651)

A free, temporary visitor visa that lets eligible passport holders visit Australia for tourism, to see family and friends, or for short business visits. You can enter multiple times in a 12‑month period and stay up to 3 months on each visit.

Overview

The eVisitor (subclass 651) is a short‑stay visa for people from eligible countries. You must apply from outside Australia. If granted, the visa lets you travel to Australia for holidays, short study or training (up to 3 months), visiting family and friends, or certain business visitor activities. Each entry can last up to 3 months and you can use the visa multiple times within 12 months.

What this visa lets you do

  • Visit family or friends.
  • Go on holiday or take a cruise that includes Australia.
  • Do short‑term study or training (up to 3 months in most cases).
  • Undertake business visitor activities (meetings, conferences, negotiation) — not paid employment.
  • Enter Australia multiple times during the 12‑month visa period, staying up to 3 months per visit.

Who can apply

  • You must apply from outside Australia.
  • You must hold a passport from a country eligible for the eVisitor program.
  • You must be a genuine visitor and intend to leave Australia before your visa ends.
  • You must meet health and character requirements if the Department asks.
  • You must not be an Australian citizen.

How to apply

  1. Check you are from an eligible country (use the Department of Home Affairs site).
  2. Prepare your passport details and any travel plans.
  3. Apply online (follow the Department’s online application process).
  4. Wait for the decision and keep the visa grant details.
  5. Travel to Australia within the visa validity and present your passport and visa details at the border.

Important notes and cautions

  • Apply from outside Australia — applications made while you are in Australia will not be accepted.
  • Each stay is typically up to 3 months; check your visa grant for exact conditions.
  • The visa is for visiting and short business activities only — it does not permit paid work in Australia.
  • Australian citizens cannot apply for this visa.
  • Always carry the visa grant details and your passport when you travel.
  • If you need a longer stay, work rights or another visa type, look at other visitor or temporary visas (for example Visitor visa subclass 600) or consult the Department guidance.
