What this visa lets you do

You can stay in Australia lawfully while your new substantive visa application is being processed. If granted, the Bridging Visa C may also give work rights if you meet the conditions for work. It does not give automatic travel rights to leave and return to Australia.

Stay: Temporary — you remain lawful in Australia while your substantive visa application is being decided (or while related judicial review proceedings continue).

• If you meet all eligibility requirements, be in Australia when the visa is granted.

How to apply (simple steps)

1. Check you meet the eligibility rules above.
2. Gather the documents you will need: a copy of your passport or travel document, evidence that you have lodged a substantive visa application (for example an Immi Account receipt or reference number), and any other identity or relationship documents relevant to your case. If any documents are not in English, include certified English translations. Keep clear copies to upload with your online application.
3. Wait for a decision. If the BVC is granted, follow any visa conditions shown on your grant.

Important notes and cautions

• The BVC only provides temporary lawful status while your substantive visa is being decided.
• It does not automatically allow travel overseas and return  get the correct bridging visa with travel rights (BVB) if you need to leave and come back.
• If you leave Australia without the correct travel permission, you may not be able to return and your substantive visa application could be affected.
