Remaining Relative Visa Subclass 835

The Subclass 835 visa is a permanent onshore family visa for applicants who are already in Australia and whose only close family members are settled in Australia (citizens, permanent residents or eligible NZ citizens). 

What this visa lets you do

• Live in Australia indefinitely. 
• Work and study in Australia. 
• Enrol in Australia’s public health care scheme (Medicare). 
• Travel to and from Australia (typically for up to 5 years from grant; thereafter travel rights may require a Resident Return Visa). 
• Apply for Australian citizenship when other criteria are met. 

Eligibility / Key Requirements

• You must be in Australia when you apply and when the decision is made. 
• You must be the “remaining relative” of a person who is an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen. 
• You (and your partner if applicable) must not have other near relatives residing outside Australia (or in Australia but on a temporary visa) who count as “near relatives”. 
• Have an eligible sponsor
• Must meet Australia’s health and character requirements. 
• You must repay any outstanding debts to the Australian Government.

• Lodge the application and pay the visa application charge.
• Wait for the department’s decision.
